If you are interested in moving to Sint Maarten your first stop is usually the Immigration and Border Protection Service (IBP). Dependent upon the reason or stay of time in which you would like to live on the island, there are various ways in which you can obtain residency

Netherlands/United States of America Friendship Treaty: The easier way for our friends from the Netherlands and the United States of America to register in Sint Maarten.

Employment: To apply for residency based on work, an employment permit must first be requested. This procedure is separate and takes place at the Department of Labor. Your prospective employer must be involved in requesting an employment permit.

Family Reunification: It is common for family members to be separated from each other for migration purposes. Children are often left in the home country while the parent works abroad. For this reason, the family reunification permit exists to reunite families separated across borders. There are cases where one member of the family may hold Dutch nationality or a valid residence permit and in turn can assist the other members with obtaining legal residency. Family members must await the decision of their residence application in the home country.

Student: Students who decide to pursue their higher education on St. Maarten with many in the Netherlands and elsewhere choosing the island to complete their internships or job training programs. For these foreign nationals, the student/intern permit is an option for temporary residency.

Directors: To obtain residency as a Director of a business be sure to have your director’s and business license before applying for residency. This procedure is done at the Department of Economic Affairs.

Cohabitation: A cohabitation agreement is a form of legal agreement reached between a couple who have chosen to live together but are not married. This agreement will first have to be notified by desired Notary to proceed with said request.

Investor: If you are interested in purchasing a land or property on Sint Maarten, an investor permit is available.

Pensioner: The current retirement age on Sint Maarten is 65 years. If you are at least 60 to 65 years of age and would like to retire to our beautiful island of Sint Maarten a Pensioner’s permit may be an option for you.

For all the above the mentioned requests the documents that are required are; Passport, Birth certificate (translated with Legalized stamp), Marriage or divorce certificate, Adoption records (if applicable) and a Police record (no older than 6 months)

Employer and Employee Work Permits

Any employer who wants to employ a non-national must request an employment permit from the Department of Labor Affairs. Under normal circumstances the employment permit process should take a maximum of 6 weeks. Applications for employment permits may either be first time requests or renewals/extensions of already existing employment permits.

Business and Directors Licenses

If you are interested in opening a Business there are different ways to do such. This can be done as;
All of which can be done individual and has to be registered at the Chamber of Commerce then approved Economic Affairs of Sint Maarten. The request process can take between 3 to 6 months also the renewal of Licenses will have to be done on a yearly basis and if your busy schedule would not allow you to do so, we can assist in this matter.

Company Vehicle Registration

Sint Maarten requires its residents to register their motor vehicles registration plates. Current plates are North America standard 6 × 12 inches (152 × 300 mm). Some plates start with different letters, sometimes similar to plates of the Netherlands: V for commercial vehicles, Taxi , M & P for regular vehicles, B for busses, MF for mopeds and motorcycles etc., the vehicle Tax fee hereof varies as well as the fee between Diesel and Gasoline fueled vehicles. To obtain the registration plates the vehicle must have valid insurance by desired Insurance company. To continue the process the vehicle must then pass the requirements at the Inspection Department. The vehicle inspection will be valid for a timeframe of two (2) years.
